I've always done the vhs-c. I choose it because of the transfer medium hassles.:-) In the beginning there was a difference in the quality. But my 3 year old camcorder has great quality. Auto stabilization is important. But most features are standard. The expensive features are dual mode to allow stills at a higher pixel resolution and the digital video out by firewire or usb.

I'd look for good low light, but I don't know if there is any real differences. My 3yr old had a fast shutter speed mode for sports. When you used it you would see the ball for example with a strobe effect when it was really moving and would not see a smear. But I've not made movies in a long time. Make sure you don't just have the external lcd. You need the eyecup viewer as the external lcd is not viewable in most daylight situations. But I don't know if any cameras come with external display only, most likely not.

If I think of anything else I pass it along.
