Are you saying that you *must* be homophobic in order to support the ban on gay scout leaders? And further, because of the national scout headquarters support of the ban, every person, in every boy scout club is a bigot?

J. F.

I never was a boy scout. I have a daughter who was a girl scout and I think she benefited from it tremendously. I know many parents who have sons in the boy scouts and all of them praise the organization.

As I understand it a part of the philosophy of the scouts is based on religion and in their view of religion homosexuality is wrong. This is not unusual and is the rule rather than the exception in most religions.

I think it is wrong to condemn the organization on the basis of a single tenet as it would be wrong to condemn the Catholic Church, for its stand against abortion, or birth control. In life there is good and bad and all of us have both in us, although in different proportions. Hell, even Hitler liked dogs and kissed babies.

While opposition to homosexuality can be based on bigotry, there are myriad social and health issues that would justify policies that discourage the practice. In the end my view is live and let live. If you don't wan't your children to think homosexuality is wrong, don't send them to scouts. Let them learn your ethic. But the name calling (Homophobic-whatever that means) is innappropriate towards an organization, which on balance does much good.
