I've seen people PLEAD for an explanation, only to fall on deaf ears.

I had promised to come up with an explanation, but the discussion moved on and it seemed moot. However, if you still want one, I'll try.

It seems pretty obvious to me that if we were employing national ID cards, the bad guys would never have gotten on those planes. There may have been additional places in the scenario where the cards could have set off warning bells if we were listening for them. Simply keeping them off the planes, though, would have been enough to foil 9-11.

If you want to keep the bad guys off a plane, or away from any other dangerous tool, a national ID would work. First, you set up parameters for access. You could allow access to citizens only. Or citizens who aren't wanted by the police. Or citizens and foreigners with valid passports, or from certain countries, or whatever. Then you use the ID and the passports (with their associated data bases) to be sure you have only good guys on the plane. I think it's pretty straight forward.
