"xbitlabs.com Tuesday, November 20, 2001 Situation with i845 B-Step [2:45 am] Rat The recently held COMDEX show in Las-Vegas showed that many mainboard manufacturers have already prepared products for Pentium 4 processors built on i845 B-Step chipset and are simply waiting for Intel to let them go. A couple of leading mainboard makers including AOpen, ASUS, ECS, EPoX, DFI, Gigabyte, MSI, QDI and SOYO pulled themselves together and showcased their solutions to the public. The others confirmed that their mainboards were nearly 100% ready as well. Nevertheless, Intel keeps asking the mainboard manufacturers to refrain from starting to sell their i845 B-Step based products. As you remember, the new i845 chipset revision called i845 B-Step differs from the predecessor by the PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM support. According to the info we received from a number of mainboard makers, i845 B-Step will be able to support up to 2GB (4 banks) of memory compared with 6 banks in case on PC133 SDRAM. However, despite the reduced size of the supported memory, the mainboard manufacturers pin a lot of hopes upon i845 B-Step chipset calling it a “new i440BX”. The major reason for high estimates like that – is its performance. as to one of the mainboard manufacturer companies, i845 B-Step outperforms all the existing DDR chipsets for Pentium 4 even including SiS645 working with DDR333. And it means that i845 B-Step based mainboards have every chance to beat even i850 with RDRAM. Seeing how optimistic the mainboard makers are about the new i845 B-Step chipset, Intel decided to do them a favor and suggested a faster launching schedule for i845 B-Step based solutions. Now the mainboard manufacturers are officially permitted to start shipping their i845 B-Step based solutions to distributors from December 17. Before January 1, the distributors should fill the stocks of large hardware stores with the new products, and on January 1, on the official i845 B-Step launch day, the mainboards can start selling to the end users. However, the previous experience showed that a multi-stage schedule like that implies: we will be able to buy i845 B-Step based mainboards this year already. And if Intel has some influence on the mainboard manufacturers and can punish them for breaking the agreement, then the distributors and hardware stores are almost independent of Intel. Therefore, we believe that i845 B-Step based mainboards for Pentium 4 processors with DDR SDRAM support should become available during the last two weeks of December already.
