You are correct about needing ID to board (although airlines can be casual in checking them). Further, if the card is positively tied to the holder by some biometric, anyone can be barred from flying (and, perhaps, held for questioning by other authorities).

No system is completely foolproof but I think this system would have kept the 9/11 attackers from causing so much harm.

One of the biggest issues associated with the ID is that it would force the government to reveal its REAL policies re illegal immigration.

I don't see how a national ID card will help. There will be someone ingenious enough to counterfeit them as well...

So, future Mohammed Attas will simply make sure their Visa is current when they board planes.

There is NOTHING that I have seen yet that the national i.d.'s will do to prevent future hijackings or terrorism. They will invade the civil rights of, and impose burdens on over 250 million INNOCENT Americans without doing a single thing to help security. They will be counterfeited and won't be checked.

Are we going to keep all non-US citizens off airliners and keep them from renting cars, hotels, etc., as someone else suggested should be done without an i.d.?

What isn't clear to some is that the terrorist sleepers don't have to have a record of troublemaking, they can be pure as the driven snow until they are called up to do their deed. In fact, you can be sure that those are the people the terrorists will employ.

National I.D. cards are a bad idea and prevent an illusory feeling of security.
