You put the question quite well, as far as it goes. There are a lot of things people prefer to do anonymously, ranging from buying Playboy with cash to setting up multimillion dollar trusts for their children, and lots in between. People have a right to do things anonymously, including not the least of which is the exercise of free speech. People interested in exercising their second amendment rights also have been fighting against registration of their purchases, preferring anonymity. I could go up the list of the Bill of Rights.

But the national "i.d." card won't stop there. It will have a lot more information and link into other databases.

A national i.d. system might reduce the number of extramarital affairs, at least unmarried couples' traveling and staying in hotels together. Won't it be nice to have the government police be able to push a button and find out not just who you are, but where you've been, what you've bought, and what you've been doing. Maybe we can even adopt the Taliban's idea of a Ministry of Vice and Virtue. It certainly would have made Clinton's illegal search through his political enemies' FBI files a lot easier, wouldn't it?

But back to the basic argument. I still don't understand how a national i.d. card will stop terrorism. Forgive me if I still don't see the explicit connection.

What I would like to see is the head of the FBI, some big city Police Chiefs, some small town Sheriffs, each write an essay explaining why they want a National ID and exactly how they would intend to use the tool.

If only we had some sort of institution that could communicate ideas to us and among us. Either printed on a piece of paper or even, I don't know, maybe broadcast between sitcoms or during a break in the celebrity interviews on TV.

If only.... It sure would be a nice break in the info-tainment and politicing.
