Ok I'll give this a shot.

"The problem is a kind of lack of piety. First, someone of a truly religious sensibility is very careful about claiming to act in God's name, per se, especially absent actual prophecy, which no one has claimed."

Osama's claims of piety are to an extreme. Although prophesy/inspiration is common in evangelical religions it is very rare in Islam except maybe as dream directives.

I posted the following description earlier to Mrs Peel, of what I think accounts for Osama's persona....:

OBL's daily activities are scripted by the fundamentalism he practices. Everyone in his entourage has rights over him which he is obligated to accommodate. For his personal needs, he would not enter the bathroom except if he stepped in with his left foot first and muttering the appropriate prayer, once there he says a prayer as he washes his face, etc. He would not pick up a drink except with his right hand while muttering bismillah (in the name of God). His behavior is thus regulated step-by-step throughout the day and into the night. He gives generously to charity, etc etc etc. You get the picture. All of this means nothing except that he is following the script as closely as he is able. He definitely worships the religion...Does he worship the God of the religion? His practice of the religion does not necessarily reveal what is in his heart. His political aspirations and association with the Al-Quaida terrorist agenda does. He hates us, he has supervised the oppression and tyranny of the Taleban. He has authorized and condoned the attacks on the innocent victims at the WTC, and others. He sees him self as the Khalifa. A Khalifa is the one chosen by God to be something like God's Emporer for the World. Whatever we think of him we should also recognize that he is very serious about this and the Al-Quaida network is committed to see this agenda manifest.

I believe we can succeed because we know our enemy and because we will form a just position to defeat the unjust.
Many in the World theater have seen us as supporters of tyrannical dicators who would have been long overthrown without support from the West. I believe a world wide revolution against tyranny has been triggered. Many of those revolutionaries are riding the fence, unsure of where we stand. The recent actions of Collin Powel may have had the correct impact on our long term well being in this regard.

"Second, a truly pious person is loathe to bring his religion into disrepute, and therefore is very careful in how he behaves before the world, as its representative."

True. One of the reasons given for us not to debate religion, or to make a big deal about being a believer is that it can bring a negative backlash on God's Religion. We are not allowed to present aspects of the fundamental requirements of the religion that would be so difficult as to create a barrier for novices to practice the religion. And behavior that is not representative of principle is absolutely wrong.

"Third, given all of the scruples against violence against the innocent found in a religion like Islam, a true Muslim would not consider terror a viable strategy, certainly unless he had exhausted all other options, which has clearly not been the case."

Right. But I have noticed how easily people are able to twist the description of civilians to give them a military status that qualifies for targeting. tsk tsk

"Fourth, one does not have to be a brilliant strategist to see that terror is generally counter- productive, and merely causes a harder line from one's opponents. So far, terrorist organizations have gained little throughout the world."

Well, in light of their stated goals I agree. But, I am seeing some very positive direction being taken on American foriegn policy and I can't help thinking this is a result of terrorism. God works in mysterious ways.

"Thus, Osama's religious beliefs are likely to be in the nature of delusions of grandeur, in which he sees himself as the savior of Islam, and supposes that he will succeed where others have so clearly failed......."

No doubt about it. What a World!

Have Peace
