OK, let me put it in terms you may understand. I presume there are gun-wielding drugrunners in the nastier areas of LA (or Chicago, or NY, or whichever city's nearer to you), selling crack cocaine to children, maybe pimping, encouraging crime of all kinds. I presume you disapprove of them in fairly certain terms. Have you gone up to one (or more), on his turf, armed only with the strength of your principles, and told him that he's a lowlife scum (etc.) who deserves to be dead in a gutter? Why not? I don't know if you have children. Presuming you have, would you encourage your children to go up to them and speak their mind? Why not? If 'standing up for my principles' gets me savaged or killed, completely pointlessly, I'll choose discretion. I don't consider it cowardice to not pick a futile fight with an animal which will happily see you dead. I'm not afraid of dogs, BTW (well, I would be afraid of a bull terrier with a grip on my genitals - I can't think of anyone who wouldn't). I just don't try and outdo them for pointless savagery at which I will undoubtedly come off worse, and which will not acheve anything...
