Galileo went on discovering even though the religion of his day was ...well... ignorant. He worked despite the church- until they caught him. Which rather goes to prove the opposite of JC's conclusion. Scientists will go on even when religions oppose them. Of course some of them may be forced to do their research in secret, and some of them may end up dead, but it is quite obvious from JC's own illustration that the urge to explore the universe, is greater than the force to repress it.

But surely no modern, democratic state free from superstition would ban the teaching and
best wisdom of science, would they?

Yes, they would. And do. This is easily proved.

Assume this hypothetical: You, as a scientist, conduct a study that absolutely meets or exceeds all accepted standards of scientific research. Your methodology is above reproach in every way. The conclusion of your study is that intelligence is racially determined. Specifically, you find that blacks are inferior to whites in cognitive ability. Do you believe that any reputable scientific journal in the United States, or Great Britain, would accept and publish the results of your research?

I rest my case.

JC
