Hi Selectric II; Re: "To my knowledge, the terrorists had all sorts of fake i.d.'s ... Using Sec. Rumsfeld's point of view (paraphrasing): We can't harden and defend all the potential targets here at home, and even if we could, it would impose untenable restrictions on our freedoms. The terrorists would win."

Do you think that the ability to get "fake i.d.'s" is a freedom that we have that shouldn't be allowed to be taken from us?

As it is you can't do much without a driver's license. All that nationalizing driver's licenses would do is give you freedom that you don't have, like the ability to use your driver's license as equivalent identification in any state. As it is, I can't cash checks outside of my home state.

I really don't care about people's freedom to fraudulently apply for driver's licenses (or easily fake obscure state's drivers licenses). I care more about my freedom to easily move around, spend money, and, frankly, identify myself when needed.

National ID cards is about freedom for honest, law abiding Americans, it's not about losing freedom.
