Oh no, J.Lo blows it
Jennifer Lopez in Concert (Tues. (20), 8-9 p.m., NBC)

By Phil Gallo

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - No one would dispute that having your first concert broadcast nationally is a pressure-cooker, but perhaps the executives at NBC should have checked to see if Jennifer Lopez and her material were up to the task.

``In Concert'' delivers nothing in the get-to-know-J.Lo department, it captures her in one obscenely derivative move after another and, probably worse of all, the camera extinguishes her sex appeal. In this Thanksgiving week of musical infomercials, the Peacock has come up with the least appetizing dish.

The special starts with Lopez in the most ridiculous of her umpteen costumes -- the Victoria's Secret version of a Guardian Angel's night uniform. She does two numbers, neither of which is among her better known, and the Bronx-born-and-raised singer portrays herself as a Puerto Rican star who has come home to celebrate her heritage with horn sections, Latin lover dancers and some polyrhythms. When you have no true history with an audience, it must be real fun to make stuff up.

From there, television auds will be treated to music that runs from benign to awful as Lopez cops visuals and choreography from Cher, Madonna, 'N Sync and Janet Jackson. Clearly we have entered the post-Britney era because Miss Spears, though still too young to drink, can say her onstage influence has already been felt.

In moments of great artificiality, Lopez wells up as she reflects on the memory of Selena; the audience, which is chattering and screaming through the whole event, gets misty, too. When folks at home hear her take a stab at ``Theme From 'Mahogany,''' they, too, will get misty. And if that isn't enough to get viewers to reach for the remote, wait until she prowls the stage catlike, singing over a dance remix. Sexy at events and sexy on the bigscreen don't translate for this young lady on the concert stage, and the casually chosen camera angles don't help her in the least.
