Dak, the downside is that tight security isn't cheap and will eventually be reflected in ticket prices or taxes. And the airlines oppose any raising of ticket prices when they won't sell at current prices. Which shows exactly why airlines and airports should NOT be in charge of security. Law enforcement is one of the functions of govt. that even Libertarians support, though they would argue over details, as would I and I suspect, you. When the outlaws are riding into town, you call the U.S. Marshall because the local security firms do not have the training or the force of law behind them.
