I had some science friends who were working on PhDs some time back. To succeed you need to work hard but stay in lock step with the line of research of your department. I remember one guy who was trying to prove an alternative theory of gravity....I don't think he got very far (he was at CU in Boulder and I'm not sure that counts).

You must be kidding.
I don't know what you ever read that makes you think I'm like the dreaded "them" who wanted to suppress you and your ideas. It's too bad you didn't have the commitment to pursue your ideas, whatever they were. Where there is a will, there is a way. Or such has always been my experience.

No WONDER you don't like me if you've confused me with people in your past who wanted to hinder you. That is rather classic transference, if you really mean what you just posted to me.
