JLA, that doesn't, to be honest, sound like 'suppression of thought by liberals'... was said benefactor a major leftie body? How was your research a threat to them? Just a guess, but I would have thought research by someone in the microbiology and biochem more likely to pose a threat to, for example, big pharma companies... not well known for liberality but certainly well-known for withdrawing or threatening funding of research which might damage their interests.

Which is, of course, an excellent reason for state-subsidised university research <g>

Meanwhile, what was so controversial that you had such trouble researching it and then got fired for pressing the issue? You should surely be quite happy to describe it here, if only as the example of your argument...
