Seizing Dictatorial Power
From The New York Times
November 15, 2001
ESSAY

By WILLIAM SAFIRE

WASHINGTON -- Misadvised by a
frustrated and panic-stricken
attorney general, a president of the United
States has just assumed what amounts to
dictatorial power to jail or execute aliens.
Intimidated by terrorists and inflamed by a
passion for rough justice, we are letting
George W. Bush get away with the replacement of the American rule of law
with military kangaroo courts.

How about the cheapest stupid billionaire of the Day award:

The other night, our dinner was interrupted by one of those infernal solicitation calls from a long-distance phone service. When we said we weren't interested, the caller retorted with the following scripted pitch: "If you don't take advantage of our low prices, the terrorists will have won."

OK, that didn't happen. (Yet.) But this did, according to the New York Post: Homemaking mogul Martha Stewart, in a cost-cutting measure, decided to nix the company Christmas and instead asked staffers to host dinner parties for 10 at their homes. No one saluted when she ran that idea up the flagpole, so she sent out a memo, saying, yes: "The terrorists have certainly succeeded if so few of you participate in a company-wide effort to 'get together.'
