I am not sure what he or others did that was prophesying?

Studying ancient prophesy and declaring that we are at a particular point of its manefestation doesn't qualify as prophesy...just an educated guess or prediction by a religious scholar.

In Islam a prophet has to be notified directly by God/Angels speaking to them, a religiously directed dream may qualify but simple inspiration doesn't count.

"BTW, I think these prophecies of victory can be a powerful weapon. When we destroy these men utterly, this will be proof positive they were false prophets and definitely not martyrs. Do you agree?"

Definitely, if they have made the claim to be Prophets. If not they can still claim to be martyrs and plead with others to carry on in the cause.

We can still point out their failure as evidence of no support from God. However, this is not as strong of a position. The counter to this, is that the Al-Quaida failure is evidence of weak faith in the followers. Which would suggest they need to be more determined to get God's support. It is a sure thing that this would be claimed by the extremists in an attempt to activate even the moderates. This is why we need to have an education and awareness campaign that is just as effective as the military campaign.
