Hi DMA; Re government power, and minimization of same. There are places where this makes sense. But it is clear that there are some goods that government does provide. Afghanistan is providing a poignant reminder of this.

As long as we're going to give up the personal right of revenge, I don't see a big problem with making the government more efficient at catching the people who commit identity theft.

This is not a matter of a reduction in real privacy, at least not over the long term. Back in the 18th century the citizens had much less privacy than we have nowadays, simply by virtue of their living in far smaller (and much less mobile) cities than we do today.

Our privacy now is not due to our anonymity so much as our unimportance. And that is something that the vast unwashed hordes of us will always have, the fact is that there are way too many of us for the government to keep tabs on. And as for the elite, their privacy never existed and never will. You can pick up a copy of National Enquirer and find out what they had for dinner yesterday.

So you don't want an efficient Afghan government, eh?
Well, you've got it!
