Hi snowshoe,

Re: I'm slightly more receptive to Star Wars now than I was pre-911. It only addresses part of the problem,

I have a shirt-tail relative who was a mathematician at Lawrence Livermore lab. He was assigned the task of reviewing some of the early work on SDI. His comments about the prospects that the system could ever be made to work were exceptionally caustic and damning, and this from a rigidly right wing Republican. The theoretical basis for Star Wars in something that is more in the bailiwick of George Lucas than Edward Teller or Ted Taylor....

You do recall that the most recent "success" the system developers had involved a shot over the Pacific where not only was the interceptor fed the telemetry data for the bogey, but the bogey itself was equipped with a locator beacon so that there would be less chance of a media crisis. If only our supposed enemies would be so considerate. The proponents of SDI seem to think the best way to deal with the deliberate spoofing of the Topol-M system is to simply not mention the facts. This gives me a lot of reassurance that this is just a bamboozlement, meant to feed the beast of the defense contractor need for revenue no matter how maladaptive and goofy the product might turn out to be.

9-11 proves conclusively to me that SDI is an archaic and foolish undertaking for the taxpayers of this nation, it in no way answers the new threats to our national security. But I can clearly see who's pockets will be lined, and it's thems that are pushing this red herring our way.
