Of the six new handset products that Nokia released in Barcelona the new generation "Calypso" (7650) deservedly recieved the most focus, but the 3rd GPRS product in Nokia's portfolio is also an important addition to the Nokia product portfolio.

In addition to GPRS & HSCSD this current generation makeover adds an FM radio but the significant addition is the Mobile Wallet application which allows users to make convenient and secure on-line transactions via the phone's WAP browser.

The security module in the phone enables users to digitally sign their transactions. With the wallet feature, it is easy to shop via WAP, using your credit card information to pay for purchases. You can also use the wallet for storing your personal data, such as user names, passwords and numbers. The wallet application supports the ECML (Electronic Commerce Modeling Language) standard. ECML is an open Internet standard (IETF RFC 2706) for digital wallets and online merchants that facilitates the automatic exchange of transaction information.

November 23, 2001

Nokia and the Zhejiang Provincial Government of China have signed an agreement to set up a new R&D center to be located in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province in China. The center will start operations at the beginning of 2002 and is expected to employ up to 500 people in 3 - 4 years' time, will focus on software development, and will develop platform technologies related to Nokia's 3G mobile networks. The aim is to start cooperation with a local partner in 2003, and the partner company will employ the majority of the personnel.

"With this new R&D center, China will strengthen its position as part of Nokia's global R&D network. For Nokia, China is the second largest market. We are convinced, based on the excellent cooperation done so far, that this project will be a long-term success for all parties involved," said Mr. Sauli Salo, Senior Vice President, Mobile Core Networks, Nokia Networks.
