The airlines' real motive in that was to control use of the ticket. Underlying that was/is a desire to stay aloft by gouging business travelers who routinely pay up to five times as much to fly as a leisure traveler.

There is the Sat night stay required for almost all discounted tickets which has the effect of businesses paying for a family of four to fly to Disney World when it sends a guy to a one day meeting in Orlando.

Actually, there are many more restrictions on how a ticket is used that support extortionist business travel fares. For example -- it is not unusual for small business people, who must watch the bottom line, to cut the price of a Dallas to west coast ticket in half by buying a Dallas to Ok City RT and an Ok City to west coast RT. Guy flies to Ok then does the RT (which probably has a plane change at DFW!!!). On the way home, he skips the DFW - Ok City legs.
If someone needs a last minute one-way transcon, in many cases, he can save 60 or 70 percent by buying a RT from the east coast to Tokyo with a stop in the city of his choice on the west coast.

Is this any way to run a railroad????? Of course if the airlines' computers spot this (and they can) they will send out a debit demanding full payment for an unrestricted coach fare. Arrrgh!!!!!
