Mobile vendors come from a proprietary world. They have roots on a 100-year business when they were selling to state-owned enterprises.

This mind-set still pervades their board-rooms. For instance: If you did very well in Asia during the Asian "miracle", you inherit the CEO chair at Ericsson.
And they are good at that: witness the billions wasted by the CLECs during the bubble. They believed that govern-mandated competition would work!

This mindset is inimical to open platforms. When, for the first time, they are going to market by-passing SS7, and the field is open to many others, ohhhh, this is a terrible feeling for those guys.

They are trying -and will use- all the tricks in the book to circumvent any rule that make a network open.

That was possible before. (The CLEC's case is there to prove it). But now it won't: They have to keep an eye over their shoulder. MSFT and its Stinger Smartphone is coming from behind to eat their lunch. This could be perhaps the biggest force propelling traditional mobile vendors to adopt openness and push forward.
