kodiak bull, JHP, and others:
Johnson was a victim of his historical context as much, but no more, than we all are. I don’t think it is a moral or political issue at all. If there is a tragedy, it probably is intellectual. Given the assumptions most people in the 60’s had about communism, expansionism, etc., what choice did he have? One might fault his or Nixon’s or _____’s inability to think beyond the collective paradigm’s of their respective lives, but isn’t that the challenge for all of us? Even David Horowitz was trapped for years by the paradigm of the left. Should we be more critical of Johnson’s ideas/actions than those of Wilson, Neville Chamberlain, or Roosevelt? What might be said, for example, of the legions of politicians since FDR who have enabled and endorsed the multi-decade ponzi scheme called Social Security? Will your children and grand-children be any less critical of our current politicos (and the body politic at large) for burdening them with the trans-generational structural problems of Social Security?
In the greater sweep of history, will future generations bemoan architects of recent US policies regarding multiculturalism, porous borders, nuclear waste, or nuclear proliferation? Yes, the contemporary context of our lives could be better in so many ways, but they also could be infinitely worse. I am thankful for the context in which I live.
