Sam, I'm just now catching up on posts. RE: "With SOX now in the green and daily trend positive, how do you muster the conviction to extend your short here?"

You touch on something that I believe is significant: conviction. It's easy enough to make mistakes and lose money in the market, but losing one's conviction is a sure fire way of blowing it IMO. It's difficult to hold a play that's going in the wrong direction, especially when the caution flags are out, but I think it's important to realize that timing a play is less important than determining the eventual direction of the stock. I still feel confident that AMAT is headed lower over the short-term, but it's clear I was in the minority today. That's OK, stocks go up and down along the way.

BTW, I covered my short before the close because I didn't want to risk positive war news coming out before Friday. If it wasn't for that, I would have continued to hold the play.
