And the name NMR was changed to MRI because the word "nuclear" makes most people nervous.

Yeah. I know how MRI works and its uses. Determining the structure of compounds used to be weeks, months, years of work. Now it can often be done in hours.

And MRI revolutionized medicine. Diagnoses that used to require dangerous invasive operations can now be done safely and often better with MRI.

I have an old back problem. I had conventional X-rays, that dye-injection procedure (can't remember the name), and CAT scans, but still he reason wasn't known until recently when an MRI was done. It showed arthritis on some facet joints and spinal stenosis. Not much can be done about that, but still in some ways that's a positive result- -because now the surgeons have no plausible reason to cut. Which previously they had pushed hard many times.
