I think I mentioned the book The Battle for God Very interesting part in it about the Sephardic Jews and how the Christians kicked out the Jews in Spain, when they drove the Muslims out. Ironically Jewish communities had flourished under Islamic protection in Spain. When Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand began unifying Spain Jews were first given the choice to convert (of course sometimes this was at sword point). Unfortunately the conversos (called marranos, or pigs, by the Christians) became suspected as practicing the Jewish religion in secret. Many were tortured over the years in waves of inquisitions- and sadly quite a few people who were not even of Jewish ancestry were caught up in this. I wish I'd gotten a large print version of the book though. The small print makes my eyes hurt.
