Steve, Re: 'AMD countered by saying they were not going to give their processors away.'

IMO, they should have responded by saying 'we'll give the processors away'. If they had they wouldn't be converting FAB25 to flash. They'd be cranking out Durons in quantity on aluminum for about what they're getting for Durons they can't sell on copper.

Steve, <IMHO Intel gave the CPUs to MS at any cost, just so AMD would not get the business.>

I don't doubt that at all, but surely there are other reasons as well:

1) Intel's P3 CPU doesn't produce as much heat as AMD's Duron. (The THG video should erase any doubt over this.)
2) Intel's P3 CPU has a lower die size and lower cost of production than AMD's Duron.
3) Intel also offered to produce the X-Box motherboard. Did AMD?

Steve,

At the last moment MS announced Intel was to be the chip.

AMD countered by saying they were not going to give their processors away.

IMHO Intel gave the CPUs to MS at any cost, just so AMD would not get the business.

While that could have been a possiblity, there could be other scenarios.

There is little market for 7xx MHz Celeron processors, perhaps Intel had extra inventory that they wanted to "get off" their books, therefore selling cheap...
