Re: You have an unusal propensity for wishful thinking...Northern Alliance (US/Russia) is now officially inagurated.

I'd rather say Western pundits have fallen prey to their own wishful planning.... All that fuss about the so-called Taliban prevent us to tackle the real conflict, that is, the ethnic tug of war between Pashtun (40%) and the Northern tribes (Uzbeks, Tajiks). The mass media keep crying wolf about the Taliban and cast them as some sort of armed band terrorizing the whole country --what a foolish view. Just think of Kosovo and the UCK... would you claim that UCK --the Albanian militia-- was a rogue army with no support from the people?

Again, this Afghan crisis boils down to quite a simple issue: Afghanistan always was, is, and wants to remain, a MUSLIM country. All its native tribes are Muslim. Now, the challenge is to keep Afghanistan's Islam a merely religious/private feature --not a hell of a revolutionary ideology. Why so? Heck, for the sake of the Afghan people in the first place! Indeed, if Afghanistan gets out of control, Putin will have no choice but to carpet-bomb Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kunduz, and whatnot. Putin will have to deal with Afghanistan the way he did with Chechnya. Keep in mind that the Russkies are dead broke... they just can't afford to drop expensive bombs in the middle of nowhere! If the Russkies took care of Afghanistan, they'd just flatten it big-time.

Gus.
