I do just have to ask... what drove the fairies mad?

Incidentally, someone who recognises an imaginary friend as imaginary is not deserving of ridicule IMO.

It was clear, I think, that the whimsy was started as a point of redicule against certain people

I had in my mind those pictures of a giant cherub-like North Wind head, blowing violently on a coal... I simply couldn't think of any more improbable source for the Sun's heat.
Seems fine to me.

As to beliefs, I stand by what I said earlier.
