Dave Have you noticed the general decrease in computer prices as volume ramped? One way to offer performance at a low cost is verticality. Intel is doing this, so is Via and so will AMD.
This does not mean they stop making separate components as well, but that market will shrink as the integrated systems take the volume.
One reason that Cyrix failed was, in part the degree of skill and specialization offered by ATI, and Nvidea and prior companies in the graphic card and chip set business(some are no longer here) that meant the Cyrix parts were lame looking by comparison. Their CPU was also lame, so the company went away.
As usual the future is hard to predict, but there seems to be a tendency towards this vertical market for the savings. See how companies are getting allied, ATI with Intel, and AMD seems to have some alignment with Nvidea. Maybe Nvidea sees ATI making huge gains as an Intel partner? Was Nvidea offered that? were the terms onerous? was ATI desperate?
