Thursday November 22 5:17 PM ET Jewish Group Slams Italian Town's Mussolini Homage ROME (Reuters) - A Jewish human rights group condemned on Thursday a plan by a Sicilian town to name a street after Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and urged the Italian government to stop the ``horrific proposal.'' ``Such an action is not only an offence to the victims of Italian Fascism, but also an encouragement to neo-Nazis all over Europe,'' Shimon Samuels, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's director for international liaison, wrote in a letter to the Italian interior minister. One of the central streets in the small Sicilian town of Tremestieri Etneo will be named ``Via Benito Mussolini'' as part of a town plan dreamed up by Mayor Guido Costa, a member of the National Alliance which traces its roots back to Mussolini's Fascists. The National Alliance is a member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's coalition government. ``We urge you, Mr. Minister, to take all necessary measures to abort this horrific proposal,'' Samuels wrote from his Paris headquarters on Thursday. There was no immediate government reaction. Costa's plans have also met with opposition in the Italian press. The left-wing Italian paper L'Unita declared ``Italy is returning to Fascism.''
