Big telcos still rule in brave new broadband world

MONTPELLIER, France, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Former monopoly telecoms operators are well on their way to becoming the dominant sellers of fast Internet to the home over supercharged telephone wires, industry players and bankers said on Friday.

A mix of complicated technology, failed deregulation and a cash crisis has brought a dozen or so new telecom carriers in the U.S. and Europe to their knees, according to participants at an industry conference in this southern French city.
