That is good to know that Islam has these provisions. I am, of course not, saying that any particular religion is no good because it is good or irrelevant. Personally, I have an affinity for Buddhism which is 2500 yrs old. All I am saying is that we should focus less on literal translations and meanings and not try to live life to the letter of whichever religion.

I am sure there is a place for Islam in the modern world. I just don't understand those people who adhere to the outdated 'rules of living' - and i mean people of any religion. In the end, it should be live and let live. Let's celebrate diversity.

Amein,
on a different note, I would like your opinion on something. What are your views on how the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden are practicing Islam? I think this question is of particular interest during these times and although the examination of Islam should be a healthy exercise irrespective of world events, the events of the past two months have certainly stirred the passion amongst the various discussions I have seen.
Do you agree with the cries of Jihad or with the animosity towards the West which was evident even before the bombing began in Afghanistan?
just curious,

p.s. and yes, I am leading somewhere with this but in an open discussion way, and not trying to stir up emotions.

Amein, since you are mentioning "need" as a moderator to the basic law. In Jewish religious law, there is a similar principle, all "laws" can be transgressed for "Hatsalat Neshamot" (saving of lifes or souls) except three "laws" for which the principle "Yehareg velo Yaavor" (namely, accept death, but do not break these three laws) applies (thus there is a hierarchy of "laws", if two are in conflict with each other, the hierarchy determines which to follow). Is there an equivalent hierarchy of commands in Islam?
