The only "atheism" that is not philosophically nihilistic is the kind that acknowledges an underlying order to the universe, along the lines of Buddhism, Taoism, or Stoicism, and, as I have explained, I do not consider them to be atheistic in the strict sense, because they functionally believe in a deity, even if impersonal. From that perspective, a number of self- professed atheists are not really atheists, because they believe in Nature in a quasi- pantheistic way.

On the question of aptness: when ordinary belief is being treated unsympathetically, I think it is very apt to remind people why it is preferable to real atheism, which is, in fact, nihilistic........
