Indeed it would have been shorter, but perhaps if the U.S. hadn't intervened, the Soviets would have prevailed and restored order.

the Afghan civil war would have been far shorter, would not have brought foreigners (Arabs and Pakis) in.

Don't forget to mention that it was the U.S. that orchestrated the rounding up of the mercenary Islamic army. And this was done before the Soviet invasion.
