You forgot to mention PAKISTAN in your analysis.... Why do most media overlook such a key player in the Afghan crisis?

Any Afghan regime will have to get Islamabad's blessing. Keep in mind that Pakistan is no longer a basket case populated with starvelings... It's a buoyant country of 145+ million people, that is, in five years from now Pakistanis will outnumber Russians. (*) Russia is dwindling at a rate of 750,000 people/year. Add to that the Russian military budget --a pitiable $8 billion per year!-- and you can grasp Russia's dread of the "Green Peril".

Both Pakistan and Russia keep outmaneuvering each other and struggle to turn Afghanistan into their exclusive backyard and the hard truth is, most Afghanis would rather throw in their lot with Pakistan --what good can Russia do them? Afghanis belong to the same Central Asian, Muslim culture as Pakistanis's, they just don't want to be subdued into just another 'stan' under the orders of Moscow...
