WHY do people place the life of the mother (or the wife, if you prefer) ahead of that of the fetus when it is either an either/or situation.

Let's try some logic here. We all understand that sometimes a fetus is removed from a mother because a continuation of the pregnancy may threaten the mother's life. You say this is favoring the mother. Well, let's think about how the fetus could possibly be favored. There are only two things that can be done with a pregnancy: (1) let it continue or (2) terminate it. Would leaving the fetus within a mother who may die be favoring the fetus? How could this be, given that the fetus draws its life support from the mother? Would removing the fetus from the mother be favoring the fetus? Certainly not in early term pregnancy, when the fetus is certain to die. In later term pregnancy, the fetus might survive, but the the mother would be saved, too, thus favoring neither. Your "either/or" requires that there be some circumstance wherein it is possible to save the fetus by killing the mother. You are going to have to tell us what this circumstance could possibly be.
