I did some checking for compatibility issues before the switch but AT&T did not have any "public" info on XP before I dived into this switch from 98 to XP. I was a little bit shocked to discover that a lot of communications companies have not rolled out support for XP before the "official" release date by Microsoft.

While working with the highest level of Technical Support at AT&T Broadband just last Wednesday I discovered that they did not fully appreciate the problem. I had to solve it myself. Imagine what the average person will have to deal with!

Anyway they are getting up to speed but they could have been ready months earlier. I fault Alcatel and Toshiba too as well as a lot of other companies who have been slow to get onboard the new operating system.

Sadly Microsoft and Dell do not support all legacy drivers for the older operating systems to be able to migrate to XP. I found this out after the fact within minutes of installing XP on my machine.

If you decide to install XP on your machine be very, very careful about installing your old programs . Many of them will not run and could make the XP system unstable. If you follow the test utility that checks for compatibility and follow it to the letter you should be ok.

Overall though I'm pretty happy with the stability of XP. It still has a few bugs but is much, much more resistant to crashing than my 98 operating system. The "Blue Screen of Death" has not popped up yet with the new hard drive and virgin install. <GGG>
