SCIAM at least got this one rigth, "Out of Fashion"

The warriors manning these boats often wore the horned helmets that have
come to symbolize the caricature Viking of opera or cartoons. In fact, such headgear was quite out of
fashion by the true Viking Age.

But the colonialization and romantisism, dream of superiority, as well as nationalism from late 1800 and
1900 up to civil rights of US is still around.

Ilmarinen

Bless civil rights in US, even the voting rights of 1971, dangling chads and all, soon to be just a memory,
just like less than $20 per barrel.

Must also have been tough to sail back and forth to the black sea to raid and then get back..

Somehow these simple trader "Vikings" got an "edge" on trades. Went all the way out to the Black Sea? I'm amazed simple traders had to go that far. Does not remind me of any other nations of course -g-

Perhaps the Vikings used some strong arm tactics? and went in for just a little empire building possibly? The historical record is biased of course, writings of monks, Christians that sort of thing. LOL

Hi Ilmarinen; Re the meaning of "viking".

Here's the official "viking" page on the Norwegian subset of the net. Read about Vikings in Norwegian if you like:

... Although they are often thought of primarily as raiders , the Vikings were also traders , explorers and settlers. ...

Perhaps we should turn this around, culturally. The white men came to North America also as traders, explorers and settlers, but do you think that the natives forgot about the bloodshed? Don't expect Europe to forget any time soon.

...
Note: Vikings differs in meaning from sea king, with which frequently confounded. ``The sea king was a man connected with a royal race, either of the small kings of the country, or of the Haarfager family, and who, by right, received the title of king as soon he took the command of men, although only of a single ship's crew, and without having any land or kingdom . . . Vikings were merely pirates, alternately peasants and pirates, deriving the name of viking from the vicks, wicks, or inlets, on the coast in which they harbored with their long ships or rowing galleys.''

The News Yesterday:- "The Times" October 2nd year 1263 AD.

From our foreign correspondent on the spot, PERLITICUS BUTTONUS in the farthest flung land called "Scotland"

WAR IN SCOTLAND, Innocent Viking Traders ruthlessly slaughtered.

Yesterday, a fleet of Viking traders arrived in Scottish waters with a bumper shipment of Autumn bargains for the needy citizens of Scotland. The Vice President of Sails King Haakon IV had this to say.

"Our ships were deeply laden with goods to sell to the Scottish civilians at bargain basement prices that our Viking Nation has become famous for. Due to bad weather we had to make an unintended stop off at a town called "Largs". I wish we had chosen somewhere else. There we were ambushed by a group of murderous Scottish criminals who drove us back into our boats, and most of the remaining Viking sails force then perished in the stormy seas.

I am utterly shocked this could happen in this civilized day and age"

Unsubstantiated reports from the Scottish King at Largs King Alexander said

"A couple of our lads went down to the waters edge to help the Viking Sails Force secure their boats and belongings. Before we knew what, they upped anchor and shot off like a bunch of scared cats. We never laid a hand on them, just because they they can't sail a Long Boat or their navigate their way across a kitchen sink is no reason to blame us for their ills. MOST folks know you cant go sailing in these parts of the world during the autumn equinox. I really do wonder if those Vikings had the proper documentation to show they were qualified to sail longboats"
