Jerusalem by Nadav Shragai Courtesy of Ha'aretz Friday November 23 2001 Hamas influence in East Jerusalem is on the rise, the security services are telling the government. The influence is being felt through community work, including educational and social projects managed by the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, headed by Sheikh Ra'ad Salah. Security sources say they are worried that spreading influence could lead to enlisting new cadres into the ranks of those ready to conduct terrorist attacks. The Islamic Heritage Committee, which has been very active in the renovations of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, has been conducting educational, health and social welfare projects in Tzur Bachar. Hamas influence is also being felt in the Islamic school network run by the waqf (Muslim religious trust) in East Jerusalem, which is officially considered part of the Jordanian Islamic schools system, say security sources. In Sharafat, near Beit Safafa, activists associated with Hamas give weekly classes on Islam to local residents, security sources have been telling the political echelon. The reports also say that the Yussifiye cemetery at the foot of the northeast corner of the Temple Mount is being renovated, with the waqf and Islamic Movement installing paved pathways through the cemetery. The money for the renovation was raised in Qatar and other emirates in the Gulf. Another security service report says the Islamic Movement is planning to open an office in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, to coordinate its activities in the area, but Islamic Movement officials deny this.
