Scandal, despondency, murder, suicide. Take your pick. Successful people have their problems, their enemies and run into bad luck. There could be something afoot. We may never know. But in the minds of men there is generally more afoot than many of us are prepared to believe. Most research scientists are extremely dissatisfied with the state of funding of their research. Polyani was extremely critical of the amount of money available for his research (Chemistry) in Canada which led to his Nobel. He stated that he would rather not have ever worked here if he had known it would be as bad as it was. Much that needs doing never gets done and the best of proposals fall on deaf ears. The world is a dry and cruel place for those that wish to get funding for noble ideas, while millions is bled from the ignorant for causes that are venial, worthless or ill considered. The operative problem is that those who can raise money haven't got the insight into what they should raise money for and there is no fair arbiter of that. Perhhaps he had the Hemingway gene to boot.
