Sometimes by saying something that can be quite uncomfortable to the reader, in that a view may be presented that doesn't conform to the readers mindset and well developed set of beliefs. I mean to challenge conventional thinking. This has always been the way that humanity has advanced. Conforming to conventional wisdom would mean that the evil world that Bin Laden hopes for would be the norm, and we in the West would still be living in the Dark Ages. It is only by challenging ourselves that we can change and grow, intellectually, emotionally and as a nation. That is why I think it is important that thoughtful posts like Mr. Lichterman's need to be discussed. Unfortunately, this thread has so far been an utter disappointment in this regard. Instead of debating the substance of Lee's perceptive claims about how the current war is being manipulated for corporate purposes, many respondents to me seem content with a "shoot the messenger" attitude. This is highly disappointing to me. It's also a bit frightening to think that a number of posters here see a state of "permanent war", the logical outcome of the stated Bush policy to eliminate all international terrorists, to be a way of life they seem to be willing to accede to. In stead of fixing the problem, i.e. the vicious circle of repressive Moslem regimes, poverty and violence that Tom Friedman refers to, we instead seem content to merely deal with the symptoms of the illness and not attempt a cure. This is a guarantee of failed policy, IMO. Regards, Ray
