Just happened to remember an event of 1960s when i read your post. <smile> I was 5 when i heard my first Qateel Shifai Abhi qamsin hein, adaa bhi hain niraali unki uspe machhlein hain ki dard-e-jigar dekhenge ! AND Raat bhi neend bhi kahaani bhi Hai kya cheez hai jawaani bhi I remember liking them both, even though i did not understand them much. And i always liked his poetry later when I was able to understand..... The second she'r was in Chitra/Jagjits first or second album too. Both albums had quite a few Qateel Shifai's if i remember correctly. Great stuff... But his most moving ghazal for me has been "Ye daulat bhi le lo". I can never hear it without breaking down every time ! I grew up in UP, and every word, every sentence of this ghazal unfolds memories for me... ye daulat bhi le lo, ye shoharat bhi le lo bhale chheen lo mujh-se meri javaani magar mujhako lautaa do bach-pan kaa saavan vo kaagaz ki kashti, vo baarish kaa paani muhalle ki sabse nishaani puraani vo budhiya jise bachche kehte the naani vo naani ki baaton mein pariyon kaa deraa vo chahare ki jhuriryon mein sadiyon kaa pheraa bhulaae naheen bhool sakataa hai koi vo chhoTii sii raatein vo lambi kahaani kadi dhoop mein apne ghar se nikalnaa vo chidiyaa vo bulbul vo titlee pakadnaa vo gudiyaa ki shaadi mein ladna jhagadnaa vo jhoolon se girnaa vo gir ke sambhalnaa vo peetal ke chhallon ke pyaare se tohafe vo tooti hui choodiyon ki nishaani kabhi ret ke oonche teeloon pe jaanaa gharaunde banaanaa banaake mitaanaa vo maasuum chahat ki tasveer apnee vo khvaabon khilaunon ki jaageer apni na duniyaa kaa gam thaa na rishton ke bandhan badi khoobsoorat thi vo zindagaani
