Some of the inaccuracies that are bandied about are nauseating. I had an argument with a fellow once who argued that the Amerindian population was ten times the current professional, consensual estimate, in order to make out as if the post- Columbian devastation were worse than it was; and who pretended that most deaths were deliberate, when it is the scholarly view that the inadvertent introduction of disease for which there were no New World immunities was the primary reason for the reduction of the population. Thus, you see, we were about as bad as the Nazis! As a country, we have enough to rue without making things up...
