I believe that MIT is private, though, of course, certain groups likely get government grants for some stuff. I guess its possible the linguistic department gets some pork. I can't understand why the MIT administration allows Chomsky effectively to use them as a pulpit to preach his garbage - given that it reflects on them every time he is quoted in the press as "a professor at MIT". It would be one thing if his credentials were in political science and it was in that capacity that he held his professorship there. But he's a bloody linguist! I would censure him and then boot him on the next speech he makes outside of the linguist area.
