Currently the best commercial quality packages for voice recognition are available from commercial software developers like IBM. But the best algorithms are to be found in the universities. I will be very surprised if we don't see an excellent voice-recognition subsystem in Linux within the next five years. Note that this will be well before there's any real compelling use for voice recognition. But voice recognition is precisely the sort of technically interesting challenge that Linux developers love. Just as the universities contributed selflessly to BSD in the past, many computer science masters theses will be devoted to new additions to Linux over the next decade. Count on it.

And of course those wacky Darwin developers can be counted on to continue to port the best parts of Linux to Macintosh.
