He should have gone to the midwest or west, such as Minnesota, Colorado, or California, but watch out for isolated red neck countries. Yes, foreign students need to choose wisely the locations of their studies. Many parts of the US is rife of uneducated, unworldly, and very narrow minded illiterate people. Many of them become college students and reside in college campuses. There, you see, is the FAILURE of the American education system from grade schools to high schools. The education system has not been able to keep up with reality and how the world has transformed or evolved in the last 20 years. It has not been able to adjust to the worldwide economy and interdependencies of the world. The ugly situation at Greensboro NC is the primary reason why schools want diversity from all over the world. However, it is not possible to exclude all the unwordly and illiterate Americans. The merge of Chrysler with Daimler Benz would never take place if Daimler were a Japanese company, or any other non-European company. This statement may offend some people but cannot be refuted by anyone with awareness. Such is the state of American mentality. It is not quite at the Middle Age level as that in many Muslim countries, but it can easily be aroused to that level at just the right socioeconomic condition. Melting pot society is great for good stable economy and society's progress, but watch out if an economic depression ever strikes. I should think that Greenspan and US leaders in Washington also realize that depression would have much worse consequenses than inflation for the US. An economic depression would not only be economic problem, but would also include a much bigger internal social problem that would set back human progress by at least one generation. This is the topic I was going to write in late September, but decided to refrain from discussing this unpleasant topic. The key point to bring up is the dire need for the American education system to bring its level of education to what has evolved with real economic world. Seventy percent of Americans do not know (cannot read nor understand) another language. The other thirty percent are the immigrants or first generation Americans with parents born outside of the US. In general, American people's awareness of the world is extremely poor despite the amount of funding for education and all the information easily and freely available from internet and libraries. As much as our government leaders realize and will expound on the need to revamp the education systems in other countries, they also need to look at our own education system where despite mandatory education, many Americans remain illiterate and are living in dark ages as far as recognizing the existence of people and culture in the rest of the world. For a country that is the world leader of the 21st century in military and economy, this illiteracy is the ugly truth. Illiteracy goes beyond reading and writing, for what good is reading and writing if the content are not meaningful or unthoughtful or basically unconcious? It is time for Americans to wake up, and become worldly if they want US to remain the number one leader of the world by end of this century.
