I disagree. One of the reasons why MSFT is not incented to lower the "family license" price too much is that this is a shrinking niche market. With each successive Windows release the percentage of those choosing to "upgrade" vs. "toss the old junk and buy a new PC" has declined. This trend will only continue to amplify as Moore's Law grinds on and PCs become ever-more-disposable commodities. The next two turns of Moore's Law will usher in form factors and capabilities so dramatically different from today's beige boxes as to make this trend unmistakable even to the most entrenched laggards.
