Sorry, but I don't agree that the phone analogy applies to MSFT. I don't have a choice in local phone service. Even though most PC owners choose to do business with MSFT there is nothing which compels them to do so. If I'm sufficiently displeased with Windows I can buy a Mac or run Linux. But I have no such choice with BellSouth here. That's what makes it a monopoly.

Let me be very clear that I'm happy Linux exists. It serves as a powerful deterrent against the sort of abuses you believe are already extant but which in fact are not. To see this just spend some time on any AOL property. The entire "user experience" revolves around force-feeding advertising to a captive audience. If AOL owned the PC OS I can assure you I'd have switched to Linux long ago.
