When my PC morphs into a wearable appliance as it will over the next few years I may just do that. In the meantime Net2Phone and such aren't quite ready for prime time. But what you describe is already starting to happen in the business world. CSCO and others are will end-run the RBOCs by allowing businesses to swap their ancient PBXs with an IP-based box without having to change their phones. The pain that the long distance carriers have suffered over the past five years will be replayed in the local market over the next five as the net continues to obsolete every other communications infrastructure. Broadcasters will follow.

Don't confuse griping with real dissatisfaction. People gripe about lots of things but that doesn't mean they're victims. People switch not because what they have isn't perfect. They switch when something hugely superior comes along. But it has to be truly superior in practice, not just in theory.

You're still hung up about preserving hardware investment. Hardware costs become more irrelevant with each passing year. Yes, a lot of businesses are fixated on this issue mainly due to asset depreciation tax considerations, but this doesn't apply in the consumer space.
