...anymore than I can imagine us having an "honest debate" on root causes

I can't resist calling your attention to this John Leo column. Maybe you've seen it already.

I don't know what will get that debate going.

Karen, I can't help but relate this to the bully in the school yard or in the workplace. Children/adults tend to rally around their peer when he/she is reprimanded even when they know the bully's behavior is wrong. It might be them next...fear, both of the bully and of the "reprimander", is the cause. If the bully is suspended or fired without much flair, all the true feelings surface.

Hopefully, once bin Laden is quietly eliminated, the debate will begin in earnest. Any dramatic episode will just fuel the fire. It gives the bully his audience.

Marie

As long as he is "on the loose" (or holed up in a cave somewhere), I think it is impossible for any "honest debate" to begin. I agree that his death will not be the trigger for any such debate but I believe that it will aid in changing current perceptions in the region.

Searching for root causes is almost thankless, IMO, as the look backward depends too much on someone's arbitrary (and eminently debatable) definition of the beginning. Thus, the problem and its potential solutions are lost in the inevitable donnybrook over who or what caused what when, where, why, and how.
